Ruby Rose has disabled her Twitter account following backlash over her casting as Batwoman.

The Australian actress – who shot to worldwide fame after appearing on Orange Is The New Black – was recently announced (8 August) as the woman behind the mask for The CW’s upcoming Batwoman series.

She is set to make her first appearance as the famed DC Comics superhero in The CW’s annual Arrowverse crossover event this December, and is expected to front a standalone Batwoman series next year.

If the standalone series goes ahead, it will be the first live-action superhero series with an openly gay lead character.

Criticism has been aimed at Rose and the network for casting a non-Jewish actress. The 32-year-old DJ has also received backlash for her “poor” acting skills, and the fact that she’s not identified as a lesbian – despite coming out of the closet at age 12.

Before leaving Twitter, Rose tweeted: “Ok tied up some loose ends, read a tweet from my idol, and am deleting Twitter now to focus on my next two projects, so I won’t be on here for a while… but can I clear up one last thing that has had me laughing but also baffled?

“Where on earth ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be Batwoman’ come from – has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change.”

Rose’s Instagram is still available but the comments have been disabled.
