Ryan Reynolds hopes that Deadpool’s sexuality will be explored in future movies.
During a panel at Comic-Con in San Diego over the weekend, the actor was asked by a fan – who described herself as bisexual – if there would be more LGBTQ representation in future sequels of the hit superhero movie.
“I love that you identify with that, [and] I certainly think that this universe needs to represent and reflect the world in very real ways,” he answered.
Ryan plays the Marvel Comics mutant anti-hero and his alter-ego Wade Wilson in the hit movie series, and much like in the comics, his character identifies as pansexual. Elsewhere, a same-sex couple featured in the recent sequel Deadpool 2.
“The great thing about Deadpool is that we’re allowed to do things that other superhero movies don’t necessarily do,” he continued.
“It’s something that I’d love to see more of, certainly through Wade, certainly through this universe because it’s something that we’re building out more.”
Deadpool 2, which was released to much fanfare earlier this year, made history by becoming the first mainstream superhero film to feature an explicitly-stated same-sex romance in the form of Negasonic Teenage Warhead and Yukio, both of whom are female.
Despite their lack of screen time, their relationship is positively portrayed, they hold hands and Yukio is referenced as Warhead’s “girlfriend”. Yes, it’s small, but there’s no denying it’s a massive step for representation in a genre dominated by straight male characters.
Brianna Hildebrand, who plays the role of Negasonic Teenage Warhead, said at the film’s premiere: “As a member of the LGBTQ community myself, it feels awesome to be paving that path.
“I think it’s really important to be able to see a version of yourself, or someone you can relate to on the screen, being invincible.”
