Netflix’s dark, Buffy-esque reboot is expected to premiere later this year.

Shipka has garnered critical praise in the past for her role as Sally Draper on Mad Men, and B.D. Hyman on Feud: Bette and Joan.

Showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa said: “We’re all such huge fans of Kiernan’s work, that when we started talking about who this new incarnation of Sabrina could be, her name was on everyone’s wish list.

“This is a darker, more macabre version of Sabrina, and we’re incredibly excited for people to see Kiernan make this iconic character her own.”

Jon Goldwater – Archie Comics boss – added: “I am thrilled that Kiernan is playing Sabrina and have no doubt that she will embody the strength, courage and boldness that has made the character a fan favourite.”

Other cast members include Jaz Sinclair (Rosalind Walker), Michelle Gomez (Madam Satan), Chance Perdomo (Ambrose Spellman), Lucy Davis (Hilda Spellman), Miranda Otto (Zelda Spellman), Richard Coyle (Father Blackwood), Ross Lynch (Harvey Kinkle) and Tati Gabrielle (Prudence).

The most famous TV adaptation of the character – Sabrina the Teenage Witch – originally aired between 1996 to 2003 with Melissa Joan Hart in the titular role.
