It turns out that the world’s oldest tortoise is actually gay

Plot twist…

At the grand old age of 186, Jonathan is the world’s oldest tortoise who has resided at Plantation House on the island of St Helena since the reign of Queen Victoria.

He was moved to the British Overseas Territory 1,200 miles off the coast of southern Africa in his thirties as a gift to the governor.

But as he went into his eighties, Jonathan became irritable and started knocking things over in the grounds.

Decades later in 1991, vets decided that Jonathan needed a girlfriend and he was given a new partner called Frederica.

The two hit it off straight away, disappearing for mating sessions on a Sunday morning, according to The Times.

After 26 years together they are still partners eating and sleeping at set times, but not all is what it seemed to the local residents.

Frederica recently fell ill and needed lesions on her shell repairing.

But when vets took a closer look they realised that Frederica was actually Frederic, and that Jonathan had been in a same-sex relationship all this time.

How fabulous.

It comes at a time when the legal status of same-sex marriage on St Helena is currently pending.

Local islands Ascension and Tristan da Cunha both legalised same-sex marriage earlier this year, but after a similar bill was introduced in St Helena last year it caused outrage among the island’s 4,255 citizens.

Consultations are currently being held across the territory discussing the matter, with a Supreme Court decision pending.
