Her partner, Milica Djurdjic, gave birth to a baby boy.

In a world first Ana Brnabić has become the first LGBTQ world leader to have a child with her partner while in office. The baby boy has been named Igor. Djurdjic became pregnant as a result of artificial insemination.

In a statement, Brnabić’s office said: “Ana Brnabić is one of the first prime ministers whose partner has given birth while in office… and the first in the world in a same-sex couple.”

The statement confirmed that Djurdjic and the baby were “doing fine.”

In 2017, Ana Brnabić became Serbia’s first openly gay – and female – Prime Minister, despite some politicians refusing to support her because of her sexual orientation.

At the time of her election, Brnabić made history, not least because Serbia only declassified homosexuality as a mental illness back in 2008, but two thirds of the population believed that it should be reclassified as one in 2010.

Currently, same-sex unions are not recognised in Serbia, and homophobia is common among the general population.

However, since her election Brnabić has not tolerated homophobia. When Nenad Popović, the Minister without portfolio, was critical of the decision to bring in some children’s’ books from Croatia because they featured same-sex parents, she hit back at him.

Appearing on the news station B92, she immediately put him down, saying: “His job is to make sure Roko, Stefan, Milos, and any other child stays in Serbia, instead of dealing with who their parents are.”

She added: “There’s no correlation between the birth rate and somebody being gay. Gay persons, too, have reproductive organs, and nobody, no government in the world can decide whether or not they’ll have children.”

Last October, the Scottish Tory leader Ruth Davidson and her fiancée announced the birth of their son. Posting a picture of her and her fiancée with their baby on Twitter, Davidson wrote: “Welcome to the world, little one. Finn Paul Davidson, born today, 10lb 1.5oz.”
