A screening of a BTS concert film has been cancelled in Russia after the group were called ‘gay’.
The Korean pop group’s hit film BTS World Tour: Love Yourself was scheduled to be played at a cinema in Makhachkala after hundreds of fans began a social media campaign to screen the film in their city.
But just one day after tickets went on sale at local venue Cinema Hall, the cinema cancelled the event following complaints from an online boycott campaign which accused the band of promoting “over-the-top immoral behaviour”.
According to The Moscow Times, a local group that opposes such ‘behaviour’ warned that BTS were “Korean homosexuals”.
The group’s film BTS World Tour: Love Yourself is set for release in cinemas around the world on 26 January, including several Russian cities – but for now it seems Makhachkala will miss out.
BTS, a seven-member boy band from South Korea, have been gaining popularity worldwide since their debut in 2013, but reached new levels of success in 2018 when two of their albums topped the US album charts.
In September last year, the group gave a speech at the United Nations where they encouraged people to be true to themselves “no matter who you are, where you’re from, your skin colour, [or] your gender identity”.
