Trump reportedly joked that Mike Pence ‘wants to hang all gay people’

No one’s laughing, Mr President.

While critics have long called for the impeachment of Donald Trump over his outrageous behaviour as President of the United States, the prospect of ultra-conservative Vice President Mike Pence taking his place seems even worse.

Pence, the former Governor of Indiana, has repeatedly shown an anti-LGBT stance during his career – he supports discrimination based on religious beliefs, said same-sex marriage would lead to “societal collapse”, and voted against passing a non-discrimination act.

Back in 2000, Pence proposed a shift in government funds from the Ryan White Act (which helps those living with HIV/AIDS) to “institutions which provide assistance to those seeking to change their sexual behaviour”.

According to The New Yorker, those extreme views haven’t missed the attention of the president himself, who, despite choosing Pence as his right-hand man, reportedly likes to “let [him] know who’s boss” every now and then.

A staff member from the president’s 2016 election campaign told the paper that after guests visited Pence’s office, Trump would often ask them, “Did Mike make you pray?”

Other sources claim that Trump mocked Pence’s conservative views on abortion and gay people.

During a meeting with a legal scholar, where Pence was told that his attempts to re-criminalise abortion would be futile, Trump reportedly said: “You see? You’ve wasted all this time and energy on it, and it’s not going to end abortion anyway.”

Later, when the conversation turned to gay rights, Trump joked: “Don’t ask that guy – he wants to hang them all!”

Meanwhile, the president continues to flip-flop on his own views on LGBT+ rights.

During his 2016 election campaign, he promised to ‘protect’ the community, but earlier this month, he became the first sitting president to speak at an anti-LGBT hate group conference.
