Far-right leader claims same-sex marriage will ban kids from saying ‘mum and dad’

An Australian senator has made some bizarre claims about marriage equality.

Pauline Hanson, leader of far-right party One Nation, told Parliament she would ignore a majority ’Yes’ vote in the ongoing postal plebiscite, and accused gay people of trying to “take the word marriage” from straight people.

“Have we considered the children?” she asked. “What may come of this, is that kids go to school and they say, ‘I want you to draw a picture of mum and dad’, or, ‘What’s mum and dad done?’

“And then ‘Yes’ are gonna come and say, ‘Sorry, you can no longer call that parent mum or dad, because it’s going to offend the children who don’t have a mom or dad.

“So is it going to be, ‘Well then you must call that person by Peter or Anne or John, and there’s no longer moms or dads, it’s no longer grandmas or grandads?

“This is the impact it’s having in other places, so I’ve been told.”

Hanson asked voters to think of the children of same-sex couples who won’t get a chance to vote on the issue, who she believes may one day say: “You’ve denied us the right to a mum and dad.”

It’s not the first time she’s caused controversy in Parliament, as last month she appeared in the Senate chamber wearing a black burqa in an attempt to call for a ban on the religious garment.

Australia is expected to take part in a postal vote on the marriage equality later this month, and while the result won’t be binding, it will give politicians a better idea of what the public wants when they perform a vote in parliament.

recent poll suggested that 63% of Australians intend to vote in favour of same-sex marriage, but LGBT+ activists have criticised the $122 million procedure, as it will likely give homophobes a platform to voice hate – which it already has.
