An Iraqi actor has been murdered because of rumours he might be gay


Concerning reports from Iraq are suggesting that actor Karar Noshi was kidnapped and murdered in Baghdad because of his perceived sexuality.

The star was known for his long blond hair and effeminate appearance, and had been the subject of a number of Facebook pages who branded him the ‘Beauty King of Iraq’.

According to news site Kurdistan24, Noshi’s body was left on Palestine Street in central Baghdad.

The report adds that there was “evidence he had been tortured and viciously stabbed.”

Faisal Al Mutar – a US-based Iraqi human-rights activist – took to Facebook to claim that Noshi had been murdered because “he [was] gay”.

However, it is unclear if the actor’s sexual orientation was publicly known.

Noshi was a student at the College of Fine Arts in the Iraqi capital, and had previously received death threats because of his style and appearance.

According to humanitarian reports, 680 people have been killed from 2004 to 2009, all mainly due to their appearances and lifestyles or sexual orientations.

They are targeted by various militant groups in different parts of Iraq.
