Russian religious leader claims that shaving your beard makes you gay

The Kremlin

Now that’s a new one…

The leader of the Old-Rite Russian Orthodox Church, Metropolitan Kornily, has bizarrely claimed that men should stop shaving their facial hair to “protect themselves from homosexuality”.

According to The Moscow Times, he also said that men who had beards were less likely to be “corrupted” by same-sex relationships.

“God set down certain rules,” Kornily said. “The Lord created everyone with a beard. No man can resist his creator. It’s a monstrous thing to see men’s clothing and hairstyles changing.”

The religious leader was also critical of how beards have “completely disappeared from the Catholic West”.

We think Kornily might be in for a shock when he discovers this recent survey, which found that gay and bisexual men are actually more likely to be attracted to men with beards…

Earlier this month, Russian leader Vladimir Putin claimed it was his duty to stop same-sex marriage in an effort to “uphold traditional values” in his country.

He also stated that he would refuse to shower next to a gay man. “Why provoke him?” he questioned.

Meanwhile, Chechnya’s horrific anti-gay purge continues – a number of human rights organisations confirmed in early April that gay men were being rounded up by police and detained in modern-day ‘concentration camps’.

The men were held “in connection with their non-traditional sexual orientation” and victims have been tortured, forced to confess information on other gay men, and even murdered – it’s been reported that 26 people have been killed so far.
