Elizabeth Taylor ran ‘secret underground network’ to provide drugs to HIV patients

Dame Elizabeth Taylor ran an ‘illegal safe house’ to get experimental medication to patients living with HIV, according to a close friend.

Kathy Ireland, an American model and activist who was mentored by the late Elizabeth, spoke to Entertainment Tonight yesterday as part of World AIDS Day.

She said: “Talk about fearless, [it was] at her home in Bel Air. It was a safe house and a lot of the work she did was illegal, but she was saving lives.

“Her business associates pleaded with her, ‘leave this thing alone’, she received death threats and friends hung up on her when she asked for help, but something I love about Elizabeth is her courage.”

When asked if Elizabeth was ever worried she would be caught, Kathy said: “She would go to jail for it. Elizabeth and fear are not in the same sentence.”

Before her death in 2011, Elizabeth co-founded the American Foundation for AIDS Research in 1985, and the Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation in 1991, both of which have contributed greatly to the fight against HIV/AIDS.
