Don’t let envy get in the way of being supportive of your peers

Mikey Walsh

It does not cause you any pain to support others, and happy for the successes that they make.

If anything, it should make you at least feel good to know you are being a decent human being and supporting the causes and people you care about.

There is such a thing as just giving a shit and showing you care, and it doesn’t have to always be done on the condition that you benefit from it.

It’s a sad truth that many in our community – regardless of the rainbow of diversity we promote – put themselves as pillars of the gay elite, and are always the first to bite anyone from within who puts them at unease. And being the very small pool that gay media and whatever celebrity, or relevance within it is, pretty much anyone is ripe for the stomping.

We promote body positivity, and yet we promote the shallow and cut. We promote mental health, and we desert those who aren’t happy enough to be around.

At any night out amongst the social media mean gays, the jealousy is as rife as the elitist selfies with x, y or z.

The fight for relevance is a pointless and pathetic little battle amongst us, and now, you’ll even see people literally creating events and awards just to give themselves and friends in the circle as a pat on the back.

We have to stop comparing ourselves to others. No one wants to show the cracks, and thanks to a good Valencia filter, and a well-positioned light, there is an option to never have to.

Just know that this kind of shit doesn’t hug you at night. A single moment of relevance, or a million likes can never give you even a shred of what a real person who knows you for who you are can.

Be kinder to you, and don’t let envy get in the way of being supportive of your peers.

You don’t have to be like them. Don’t get caught up with the mean girls.
