Nico Tortorella has spoken out about his polyamorous relationship.
The 28-year-old actor, who stars in TV Land comedy-drama series Younger, has been in a polyamorous relationship with fitness instructor Bethan Meyers – who identifies as gay – for the past 11 years.
During an appearance on new Bravo show Personal Space, Nico went into detail about the structure of their relationship, and what being polyamorous means for those who aren’t in the know.
“I’m not in an open relationship so I can go out and just fuck whoever I want,” he explained.
“For me, it’s more about the ability to emotionally connect with people outside of my primary partner and just have that space.
“The fact of the matter is, we’ve only been shown one story since basically the beginning of time and that’s man, woman and family – and that’s it.”
Steve Ward, the CEO of Matchmakers who also appeared on the show, argued that it “isn’t good practice to invite other people” into your relationship when creating a life and a home together.
“If you consider your life to be like a rock-faced wall, you can climb that wall by yourself or you can climb that wall in a group of people, like Nico here would prefer to do,” he said.
“Or you can climb that wall in tandem, and two people climbing that wall together are more likely to make it to the top easier, more safely that if you have too many people in your group or if you’re just doing it on your own.”
But former Gay Times cover star Nico wasn’t having any of Steve’s bizarre metaphor.
“I’m always climbing the wall with one other person,” he explained, “but that person is just changing.”
Earlier this year, Nico stopped by The View to talk about being sexually fluid, describing himself as a “lover of love”.
“I’m just fascinated by different expressions of love and how people find each other,” he explained. “More importantly, why people fight love. There are so many people around the world who fight specific types of love.”
