You know who Jane McDonald is: she sings, she survived Loose Women, and she really likes cruising.
Earlier this year, her travel series Cruising with Jane McDonald became a smash on gay Twitter by basically being camper than Christmas drinks ‘n’ nibbles chez Christopher Biggins.
Series two begins on Five tonight, so we gave Jane a call to find out more.
There’s only one question I can start with: Have you managed to make series two even camper?
I think you know the answer to that! In fact, if you look up camp in the dictionary, it says: “Go to Jane McDonald.” It’s ridiculous, and I don’t mean to be that way at all.
I mean, I can’t see it myself, to be honest. I’ve just always been like this and I don’t know why. But yeah, series two is definitely camper than anything.
There was one particular thing you said in the first series that was so camp, I’m going to have to quote it back to you.
Oh, go on…
“I’ve been cruising many, many times – but this is the biggest thing I’ve ever seen.”
You must have known what you were doing.
No! You see, this is it, Nick, I have no idea what I’m saying. If I actually thought about what I’m saying, do you think it would come out like it does? I don’t even mean it to be funny.
When I watched the first series, I thought at first, “Have they just used all my outtakes?” But there are a few more of those innuendos in series two, I’m sure, because I just don’t know what I’m saying most of the time.
We’re all relieved to hear that once again, you’re going to be ending each episode with a song. How do you pick which songs you sing on the show?
Well, it’s a team effort. I do work with some amazing people who say, “You have got to sing this one.” You can imagine, right?
But I tell you what: I have never hit notes that are so difficult, or sung songs that are so camp but so fabulous in all my life. And we’ve gone a bit more overboard with the production. So you lot are in for a real treat this series.
Cruising with Jane McDonald is on Five, Fridays at 9pm.
