“A whole new woooooorld!”

Will Smith is set to star as the Genie in the upcoming live-action Aladdin. The news came officially from Disney as part of many revelations at Disney’s D23 Expo in southern California. Robin Williams famously played the same role in the original 1992 cartoon version.

Disney also confirmed who will take the title role in the movie. Egyptian-Canadian actor Mena Massoud – who is currently in Amazon series Jack Ryan – will play Aladdin.

He will be joined by English actress Naomi Scott as Jasmine. She most recently kicked ass as the Pink Ranger in the Power Rangers film.

Director Guy Ritchie previously confirmed the music will play a vital part of the movie.

“I think it’d be tough to not make [Aladdin] a musical,” he told Nerdist. “I’ve really just immersed myself into that project. So I’m still looking for cast members, we still haven’t found exactly which direction we’re going in.

“I’m confident that at some stage it will reveal itself to me, but right now it’s just a bit too premature.”

Aladdin will mark the first time Guy Ritchie has directed a musical for the big screen.

The movie does not have a release date yet.
