19-year-old actress Shannon Purser – known for her role Barb on Stranger Things – has come out as bisexual.
Purser, who also stars in another Netflix show Riverdale, posted a screen shot on Twitter of her announcement after receiving backlash from fans regarding Archie Comics characters Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge.
In the screen shot she says that “I’ve only just recently come out as bisexual to my family and friends.”
“It’s something that I am still processing and trying to understand and I don’t like talking about it very much.”
Shannon added: “I’m very much new to the LGBT community.”

Her decision came about after backlash from fans regarding characters Betty and Veronica in Riverdale where they recently kissed in an episode.
Fans complained that the show falsely implied the two characters Betty and Veronica to be a couple, hence ‘Beronica’.
A fan on Twitter criticised the scene, tweeting: “Riverdale had the chance to open doors and do something groundbreaking, something that would mean so much to so many girls.”
Purser replied to the comment with: “And I get that, representation is so powerful and important. But we didn’t write the show? We literally have no say in what happens.”
She finished up by saying: “Lemme clarify, not angry with at beronica stans. Not even angry at rightfully upset beronica stans. Disappointed with hateful people. Peace.”
It was then after this that she came out as bisexual.
Her character’s sexuality wasn’t the only one to be discussed in Stranger Things. Noah Schapp who plays Will Byers spoke last year regarding his characters’ sexuality.
