RuPaul’s Drag Race smashes ratings records with season 9 premiere

Mother has arrived!

Last Friday’s premiere of RuPaul’s Drag Race season nine left us gagging, and it seems we weren’t the only ones as it’s been revealed that the episode drew in the highest viewing figures of the show’s history.

According to Deadline, nearly one million people tuned in to watch the brand new batch of fierce queens strut their stuff down the runway – a figure that’s almost double the last season’s premiere.

The popular reality show, which finally won a much-deserved Emmy award last year, made the transition from Logo to a brand new home on VH1 this season, a move which likely explains the huge jump in ratings.

We’re sure that understated guest appearance by Lady Gaga, who encouraged her 65.7 million Twitter followers to watch, didn’t hurt either.

As well as judging the contestants’ fabulous looks, the pop superstar also took the time to go backstage and offer support to each queen, revealing: “I’ve always been surrounded by powerful gay men who life me up.”

The next episode of Drag Race will feature Lisa Kudrow and the B-52s as guest judges.
