Cyndi Lauper talks “fucking rules”, drag queens and acceptance with Kinky Boots musical

She’s music royalty, the aural childhood of thousands and so decorated in prestigious awards that we’re not sure where she has space to keep them. This, of course is pop royalty – Cyndi Lauper.

As her Kinky Boots musical prepares to open in London tonight – of which she wrote the music for – in true Lauper style, the Girls Just Wanna Have Fun singer chats with us in the September issue of GT.

Explaining that her musical influence come from the likes of Boy George and his pop-dance show Taboo, creating a musical with upbeat tracks twisted with heavy ballads was always her goal.

But with a show that follows the life of a local drag queen and factory owner and their rather unlikely friendship, writing for the stage was no easy task.

‘When you know nothing, everything is possible,” she tells us.

“I come from a world where there’s so many fucking rules and everybody’s got their fucking hand up. It wasn’t like that in this show. It was one for all and all for one.”

Her boogie-inducing score won over the Broadway community, winning the Tony Award for Best Original Score and the Grammy for Best Musical Theatre Album last year.

And even when you’re a multi-award winning star, sometimes such public recognition for your work can still be a real shock…

“I started crying, it all became too much. I was walking through this project like fucking pros.”

And obviously we couldn’t possibly not ask her about the iconic red boots that the shows drag star wears throughout. Cyndi admits that she’s still able to compete with her legs against the shows leading man – or should we say lady – Matt Henry.

“The rest of me isn’t quite as young as before, but the legs are still good…”
