JUSTIN FASHANU

15 years after his university death, we revisit the story of Nottingham Forest Legend and former GT cover boy Justin Fashanu - Britain's first (and so far only) out gay footballer.

For every ten thousand articles asking that same incessant question 'Where are all the gay men in sport?', a sportsman might come out. Usually right at the end of his career and to great adulation and debate. But then dust settles and we start asking ourselves the same incessant question all over gain. It's an exhausting cycle. But as the fifteenth anniversary of his passing draws near and we reflect on what Justin stands for, it's perhaps worth focussing on the positive. Justin was a man of numerous talents, achievements and, according to those who knew him best, great kindness. In coming out on the front page of The Sun at the age of 30, he made an unparalleled contribution to a cause that he knew was bigger than him. And that smile, which takes centre stage in the shot for his July 1991 Gay Times cover interview, is pretty special too.
