Joe Oppidesano

Following on from the success of Testosterone, photographer Joe Oppidesano (pictured) has scoured the globe for more hot men to shoot. His new book, Uncensored, is the result. It’s lavish, very rude, and we very much likey

Where do you live?
The gayest street in the world; the corner of Christopher St and Bleecker in NY’s West Village. As my neighbour Amy Sedaris calls it, “corner of cocksucker and buttlick” streets.
Were you surprised by Testosterone’s success?
I was blown away. It was never meant to be a book. I brought some of the images to one of my closest friends, Tom Eubanks, who was in publishing. I thought it would be cool to do a calendar, but when he saw the body of work in one piece, he became my agent, sent off discs to publishers, and within a few weeks we had a book deal.
How has it affected your career?
My world was turned upside down, inside out and rotated. Somehow, that book touched a nerve at the right time in the community and, although mostly for good, I was also taken back by a lot of clients who I’d been shooting for for years, but who’d stopped using me because of the porn connection.
Tell us about your new book Uncensored:
Uncensored started before Testosterone was finished. I shoot all the time and just keep collecting the shots to release. I’d gotten a lot of shady queens’ comments on different blogs – I was a one trick pony, blah, blah, blah – and I was like, “You know what, bitches? I was a fucking fashion editor for L'Uomo Vogue, Vanity Fair and W; I can do anything you want, and more!” So I changed up my style to a more sophisticated, glamorised version of porn. The chapters are based on my life experiences and twisted things that run through my head. One chapter is about what a bunch of nasty pig-boys do at grandma's house while she's out playing Bingo. Eating ass, fucking, jerking off on tricycles... crazy shit.
No doubt it will feature more pictures with the über-hot Colton Ford? Is he your muse?
She's my sister, that one. He is definitely one of my muses. He defines a certain old-school Hollywood glamour and masculinity that I love. He's sweet as can be, knows how to position his body, and is ultra-professional.
So, have you guys ever had more intimate relations?
Next question!
Tell us something about yourself we don’t already know.
Let’s see, where to start? I am ADD, totally retarded, always stoned (pot) and clumsy as fuck. I have almost zero inhibitions, try and live my life the way I want to, and was a crystal meth addict for a while, due to my success with Testosterone, being broke, freaking out and not believing I could top that. I got a bad deal at my old publisher – basically, was raped by them – I was successful on the outside, a mess on the inside. I started hustling again to make some money, found myself in a world of crystal meth, and woke up from it after my friends sat me down for a nice intervention. I'd probably be dead if they hadn't. Whatever you survive in life makes you stronger, and makes you the person you’re supposed to be.
