GT LETTER 417

They say everything comes to those who wait.

‘They’ are obviously FAR more patient than me, but the waiting paid off and Derren Brown finally agreed to be on the cover of Gay Times. I’m a fan, so obviously I’m delighted. But there’s something of an assumption that every gay person that’s somehow in the media spotlight either has a ‘duty’ or would be clambering to appear in or on gay magazines. That just isn’t the case. There are lots of reasons and all we can do is ask. Repeatedly. And in the case of Derren, his agent probably thought we were stalking him. Not only is it especially great to have Derren’s first ever gay press interview, it’s lovely to be able to feature someone a little bit different in their skill set. I know you love sportsmen, actors and musicians, but what Derren does is mind-blowing on a whole other level…

And deftly sliding from one illusionist to another – the actual Wizard of Oz – we have another exclusive in the slightly emerald green-tinted form of the cast of Oz: The Great and Powerful, Disney’s massive new prequel to probably the most famous movie of all time. Not only do we have the Wizard himself – James Franco no less – but we’ve also got chats with ALL of the witches. Yes, I love a witch – who doesn’t? Sadly no Jean Marsh in this movie but you can’t have it all.

We take a slightly more serious turn as we speak to Peter Tatchell, to ask what might have been in the Bermondsey by-election 30 years ago, discover what life was like for gay men serving in WWII and talk with a gay asylum seeker living in Britain.

Finally, thanks for the overwhelming positive response to last months naked issue – keep an eye on our Facebook and Twitter to bid for signed prints for Terrence Higgins Trust. This month, by sheer coincidence, there’s hardly a nipple in sight. But we’re still looking for people to pose nude in our upcoming Readers Lives feature, so drop me a line on edit@gaytimes.co.uk.

Be safe and I’ll see you in 30 days.
