February 09 - Our Lily Cover

It’s been a looong time since we had a woman on the cover, so I’m very proud to present the incomparable Lily Allen: Pop star, motor mouth, tabloid hero and up-for-it ladette. She’s given us her gayest interview ever: drugs, lesbian wet dreams, homophobia, Perez Hilton and Elton John. I’m hooked.

Speaking of hooked, Boy George (who, by the time you read this, will have been sentenced for imprisoning and beating a male escort) – what went wrong? Patrick Strudwick has a theory. More frighteningly, what does it represent for gay men? How far have we slipped from our idealistic liberation days to become an anything-goes, instant-gratification, bugger-everything-else culture?

We’ve re-photographed most of our columnists for this issue and had much fun in the process. A day playing dress up with David Hoyle is to be treasured and I hope the photos speak for themselves. Speaking of new photos – I want to introduce you to two of the team who make GT the magazine it is – (L to R) Mark King, our discerning art director and Joe Heaney, my long-suffering and militantly ginger deputy. Bless you both. Have a great month, and if it gets too much, just crawl back under the covers with a copy of GT and a torch and curl up with us until spring, when there really will be green shoots showing.
