Gran Canaria - sunshine all year round!

Check out the delights which Gran Canaria has to offer.

Gran Canaria, is the Canary Island which shines all year long! You might be forgiven for thinking Gran Canaria was just a hot destination in May for the massive annual Gay Pride, but the reality is the island is one of, if not, the top gay tourist destination in Europe, the whole year round. We ask: “What’s the secret of success for this tiny little island?”

Well, obviously it’s the gorgeous sand dunes of Maspalomas, fronting the iconic gay corner of the Island - no wait, it’s the Yumbo Centre in Playa del Ingles, full of LGBT cafes, bars, clubs, dens etc - hang on, it’s the drag scene, all those show bars with nightly comedy acts, although it could be the specialist gay complexes, men only, or the abundance of hotels offering close proximity to everything gay…stop, stop, stop. Its success lies in its diversity!

From the moment you land, your holiday in Gran Canaria can be as gay as you want it to be. Book a men-only complex, try a gay friendly hotel, or go deluxe with a bungalow, pool etc., of your own. Settle in, enjoy the weather, never less than 24 degrees, tan time is anytime! Cruise the dunes, cruise the Yumbo Centre, heck, you can get lucky here just walking down the street. There are no limits, but Gran Canaria is more than just a hotbed of men in Speedos.

By day you really should try the mountain hikes, visit the volcano, Roque Nublo, join a men-only jeep safari, cycle ride (bring your Lycra), or hit the many beaches, take a camel ride across the sands, boat trips, submarines, jet skis, see dolphins and whales, aqua parks, zoos, there is no way to be bored! It’s impossible. Kiosk 7 in Playa del Ingles is the local hotspot on the beach for us gays, but there are masses of coves, tiny inlets for nudism, winkle collecting or just privacy from the crowds. Only a lazy tourist misses the days.

Take a bus to the capital Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, visiting Santa Catalina, a lovely gay neighborhood in the north, lounge over a coffee, park on Las Canteras Beach. The north is full of handsome Spanish Canarian men, looking forward to learn a bit of ‘English’ from a friendly tourist. Likewise, practice your ‘Español’ over a refreshing arehucas and cola. A bit of haute couture is also on the cards in Las Palmas city, if you have the dinero, to spend on true Canarian product.

Now…take your siesta, revitalise, shower because it’s night time. It’s only fair to mention the Yumbo Centre, because it’s got everything. Dinner then chillout? Take your seat in a comfy open air lounge bar, or dinner then entertainment? Grab a table in a showbar. Just want to people watch? Try any of the terrace bars. Oggle the street entertainers, muscly acrobats, capoeira, clowns, artists, it’s like a gay Spanish Covent Garden. Then for late night, take in a disco, or party bar, sex bar. Single? It’s unlikely you will stay that way in the Yumbo.

Gran Canaria is unique: Friendly islanders, fantastic local cuisine, local drinks, sunshine, sangria and sand, winter or summer, book yourself a treat in an island paradise!
