Review: The Gate (Islington, London)

Vegetarian food has never tasted to good!

Nothing usually strikes fear into the hearts of rampant carnivores like the phrase, “Would you like to check out this new vegetarian restaurant with me?” But put aside any concerns you have about tasteless tofu dishes and strips of greenery that means you’ll be gagging for a burger within half an hour of eating it. The Gate in Islington, London, is not only delightful, their food is downright delicious!

With a huge range of tasty and diverse dishes that not only fill you up but are beautifully presented, we were astonished by the level of love and care that’s clearly gone into the menus. Our starters of Halloumi Kibi and Oriental Mushroom Ceviche hit the spot straight away, with a main meal of Green Thai Curry - we actually didn’t miss the chicken at all - and Wild Mushroom Polenta looking like works of art and popping off every available tastebud. For dessert we devoured a Apple and Cinnamon Tarte Tatin and Lavender Creme Brulee. Just scrumptious.

The Gate specialise in vegetarian and vegan cuisine from around the world and boasts a culinary style the owners Adrian and Michael Daniel call Indo-Iraqi Jewish with French and Italian influences. When you’re missing the meat, it’s important not only to combine various foods and flavours, but also to make sure the meals leaves you full and satisfied at the end of it. The Gate manages to achieve this beautifully, all in gorgeous surroundings with friendly, attentive staff and fresh tasting food, thanks to specifically sourced ingredients. Honestly, this was one of the best and most surprising dining experiences we’ve had for some time.

If you’re looking for a decidedly different place for a first date or a catch up meal with a good friend, we heartily recommend The Gate. C’est magnifique!
