Blackpool Pride

Gareth Gates headines this year's Blackpool Pride.

Blackpool’s first Pride Festival is being held at the iconic Winter Gardens as a two day indoor Festival on Saturday 8th and Sunday 9th June. Entrance is free and all LGBT people, their families and friends are welcome.

The team at Blackpool Pride Festival have announced that pop superstar and million selling artist, Gareth Gates, is to headline this year’s event on the Saturday afternoon. Gareth shot to fame and won the hearts of the nation during Pop Idol way back in 2002 and went on to have four No. 1 singles and sell over three million records. More recently, Gareth has been treading the boards and has appeared in a series of hit musicals including Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat, Les Miserables and Legally Blonde. He is still a familiar face on television, appearing on a number of TV shows including ITV’s massive hit show Dancing on Ice.

On the Sunday afternoon, Black Lace will headline the show. They are best known for their novelty party records, including their biggest hit, ‘Agadoo’. The band first came to the public eye after being selected to represent the UK in the 1979 Eurovision Song Contest, in which they finished seventh, with the song ‘Mary Ann’. Black Lace then went on to have success with party anthems, such as ‘Superman’ and ‘Do The Conga’. They also had a massive hit with ‘I am the Music Man’ and were behind the national Trainline advert ‘Choo Choo Choo come on and join the Trainline!’

In addition, there will be a variety of other fantastic performers at the Winter Gardens, many from the local area, with the added attraction of information services, an LGBT market place and a restaurant and cafe for the duration of the Festival. There will also be a separate family area, a young person’s area and an area for our trans community where we will arrange a changing room, professional advice and refreshments.

Additionally, plans are also underway to host a walking parade through town, from the Town Hall to the Winter Gardens. The Mayor of Blackpool, Councillor Eddie Collett, will start the parade and also open the Festival in the Winter Gardens.

In the evenings, everyone is invited to visit the North Shore area of the Blackpool and enjoy all the wonderful Partner bars and venues. Many of these will be putting on their own cabaret making the entire weekend a vibrant and exciting celebration of our LGBT community. The fun starts on the Friday evening, so for those of you coming from outside Blackpool it is advised that you book your hotels now as the demand for rooms will be very high.
