Elton John Supporting Student Pride

1500 hot young gays in one place

We love a good Pride. Rainbow flags, brightly coloured cocktails, endless beautiful people to devour. Not to mention that Pride is, of course, a protest as well as a party. “We’re here and we’re queer!”, as they say.

This weekend it all hots up for students, as about 1500 of them will be gathering from all four corners of the United Kingdom for National Student Pride in Brighton. Now in its eighth year, Student Pride has got the backing of the ultimate gay icon. No, not Samantha Mumba. Elton John himself - and hubby-to-be David Furnish - are its sparkling new ambassadors. And we’ll assume baby Elijah is supportive, once he’s learned to talk.

Brighton has been known to have one or two gays already. But likely even Britain’s campest town won’t know what’s hit it 1-3 March, with more queer big-wigs than you could shake a Steps compilation at. Evan Davis (him off Dragons’ Den, also known to the Daily Mail as the gay telly guy who dresses in skimpy leather) and Charlie Condou (Marcus in Corrie, also a genuine gay) will be joining GT’s very own Paris Lees (transgender icon) for a debate on the big gay and trans issues of the moment.

Plus if you’re looking for a job (we’re told there is one out there, somewhere) then Ernst & Young, Accenture, IBM, and the RAF (uniform klaxon) will be amongst their extensive jobs fair.

Oh, and do you remember Lucy Spraggan off of The X Factor? Yeah, she’s there as well. Basically anyone who is anyone is there. Lucy is headlining Saturday night’s partying, starting off at the Brighton Dome Corn Exchange, then heading to Revenge (sounds fierce), followed by hangover cabaret in Legends for those along on Sunday.

There are still some tickets available, and for anyone who lives in London there are trains through the night back from Brighton, so check ‘em out at Student Pride’s website.
