Manchester shows its pride

Another year of success for Britain's biggest pride

The August bank holiday weekend is always a busy one – festivals, music concerts, the newly annual VMA twerk-fest. But one celebration that's fallen on the August bank holiday for many years now is Manchester Pride; the biggest, most extensive pride in the UK.

GT went along to this year's festivities. With a line-up that included Anastacia, All Saints, Foxes, Pixie Lott and friend of GT Conchita Wurst, it was arguably Manchester's greatest ever showcase. And the acts all went on to impress, naturally.

But Manchester Pride's great selling point isn't just the big name acts it attracts. They may draw the crowds in, but what keeps the crowds coming back year after year is the atmosphere it spurns. Few, if any, other pride events capture the same sense of excitement that Manchester does. And though the overwhelming majority of pride goers are LGBT, as you'd imagine, a great many other Mancunians turn out too. It feels like the whole city joins in.

That keeps the seemingly endless stream of bars and clubs full for the four days of pride. Notably the classic Manchester venue Poptastic was in full flow on Saturday night, with enough Britney and S Club 7 on repeat that we could've sworn they were still waiting for the millennium to start in there.

When a night at Poptastic has done you in, and after the cheesy chips, then it's probably time for sleep. It's not an obvious priority, but when you do there's nowhere better than Manchester's Radisson Blu Edwardian. Its beds are frankly ridiculous – how they get them that comfy we'll never know. It's basically a crime not to share it…

Manchester's Radisson Blu Edwardian – an official sponsor of pride – was encouraging visitors to tweet all their funtimes with #ShowUsYourPride. And oh, what fun was had…

Manchester Pride 2014 was probably the most successful yet.
Bigger than before. Bolder than before. And just as much fun as always.

GT gives it: 5 stars
