GT Charity Partner: Positive East

GT partners with a number of charities that help and work with the LGBT community...

For the last 20 years, Positive East has been London’s largest HIV charity, helping to support thousands of people diagnosed with the virus. Every year, over 10,000 people approach the organisation urgently seeking advice and support.

The charity provides a range of services including one to one counseling, advice sessions and group support. Other practical services include helping people with HIV get back into work by providing them with CV and interviewing techniques. They also offer fast and confidential HIV testing. You will receive your results in a matter of minutes as well as help and support from the team’s professionals. There is no need to book an appointment and you can visit one of their walk-in test sessions in Tower Hamlets, Hackney, Newham, Redbridge, Waltham Forest, Barking and Dagenham.

Paul Fleming first approached the charity when he reached a real low point in his life, and the charity put him back on track. He is now Positive East’s Director of Fundraising and Communications.

“I had a period of my life where everything went wrong," says Paul. "I took risks that I shouldn’t have taken and as a result I became HIV positive. A friend suggested that I go to Positive East and it’s the best thing I have ever done. They helped me get my head around what was going on. My financial situation wasn’t great and they helped with my benefits, housing and wrote some letters to me that I could give to the council. They also encouraged me to volunteer, which was an important step on my journey back to the rest of my life."

Positive East relies on volunteers and donations in order to carry out HIV testing, counselling and sending food parcels to families living in poverty. You can donate online through the Just Giving website or by text or post. Positive East’s details and further information can be found on their website. You can also donate £5 simply by texting HIVPO5 £5 to 70070.

Your contributions will help provide the support for those people struggling to come to terms with their HIV status and help rebuild their future.
