McLaren and Moore’s Fashion Beast Roars to Life

Influential and controversial punk manager and fashionista posthumously releases comic

Fashion Beast is a new comic series released this week. Created by visionary comics writer Alan Moore with former manager of the Sex Pistols and New York Dolls Malcolm McLaren, the comic is adapted by Antony Johnston and Facundo Percio.

Actually starting life over 20 years ago as a planned film collaboration between McLaren and Moore (unusual due to Moore’s vocal distaste for the medium), Fashion Beast stems from McLaren’s idea of mixing the ‘strange and isolated life of Christian Dior’ with the Beauty and The Beast fable.

As Moore says,

“I’ve often wondered what such an unlikely concept would have looked like had it been properly realised. Now, albeit in a different medium, I finally get to find out thanks to Antony Johnston’s excellent adaptive skills and the appropriately stylish artwork of Facundo Percio. It’s an odd tale, in its subject matter and in the mode of its telling, and I like to think that Malcolm would be very pleased to see another of his startling and incendiary ideas brought so intriguingly into existence.”

The comic is dark, dystopian and design-wise filled with the edgy punk-stylings McLaren was famous for helping bring to the world, and filled with drag queens, vogueing, nightclubs, fashionistas and something terrible lurking at the heart of the world of fashion.

Fashion Beast #1 is published by Avatar, on sale now at all great comic shops.
