What Torchwood gay sex scenes?
We heard today that the BBC had cut gay sex scenes from an upcoming episode of sci-fi drama Torchwood.
‘That’s odd,’ we thought. ‘Torchwood’s about as gay as you come, what with Lady Barrowman and Dame Russell T Davies at the helm.’
And as usual, people got into a bit of a Twitter storm and (probably) started lifting pitch-forks to arrange a sexually-charged protest somewhere. So we thought we’d actually just drop Rusty a line and see if there was any truth in the rumours.
And gawd bless him, he took time out from being a professional, chart-topping influential gay (we’re joking, he was actually on holiday but he still took the time to reply) to email us his personal opinion:
“Now be calm.
“There is a cut in Ep.3 to simultaneous gay AND straight sex scenes. As if I’d let them cut gay sex alone! Dear God. Have faith! They’re cut because the BBC thinks that, unusually, a young audience watches post-watershed Torchwood, because of Captain Jack. And it’s not as if Editorial Policy thinks sex is shocking in that context; they just think sex scenes cause embarrassment between kids and the adults watching, which encourages people to turn over. They want viewers to stay!
“And Ep.7 goes centre-stage with a proper, dark, beautiful, honest love story between two men, and it’s one of the best things I’ve ever had my name on. So there’s been no degaying here! Seriously: as IF I would! Come on!
“Be calm!”
So there you have it, from Russell T Davies himself, creator of Torchwood, saviour of Doctor Who and – funnily enough – one of the people interviewed in the new GT, which is out now!
Torchwood: Miracle Day is on BBC One, Thursdays, at 9pm (and on iPlayer)
