VAULT: Justin Fashanu July 1991

The first openly gay footballer

Delving into Gay Times vaults ahead of our Sport issue we find this timely issue with the first openly gay footballer Justin Fashanu adorning the cover. We introduce this fascinating and important interview by saying that we are not sure whether his story will end in tragedy or triumph. Unfortunately of course it turned out to be the former - he committed suicide seven years later.

Next up there's an interview with John Spong - Bishop Of Newark New Jersey who ordained the first openly gay man to the priesthood. We also talked to Tom Watkins - ex-manager to Bros and Pet Shop Boys - chatted with the lesbian singer song-writer Phranc and revisited the work of playwright Tennessee Williams.

One of the biggest news stories was the Queer Wedding celebration set up by OutRage. Highlighting the rights that gay couples were denied back then - including the right to adopt a child and get their relationships officially recognised - it is a reminder of how far we have come.

We also had a spread of pictures from Brighton pride - incredibly at the time it was the first ever local Lesbian and Gay pride Festival.
