Bar/ Restaurant Openings - Edinburgh/ Oxford

Oxford and Edinburgh see new additions to the bar/ restaurant scene this month:

The Scottish capital gets an addition to its high-end venue tally in Hawke & Hunter, a restaurant/ private dining/ late-night bar/ billiard room set in a five-storey Georgian Townhouse, plus a ‘secret garden’ and four boutique bedrooms above. There’s a muted ‘Gothic Romantic’ theme throughout with a side order of ‘modern equestrian decadence’. Quirky touches include a Disklavier (piano that plays itself) and a dedicated whisky bar. The restaurant menu samples Scottish fare, and dishes are created by head chef Suzanne O’Connor. Expect Shetland mussels, Highland venison and fruits of the lochs.
Average 3-course menu for two: £48 excl drinks. Drinks are pricey

Oxford goes all Polynesian with the opening of bar/ club Kukui, which ‘celebrates the tiki paradise of the South Pacific islands. Decently priced cocktails come in at £5.50, and sharing drinks include The Punt, The Witch Doctor and The Thunder God (all served to the background sound of tropical rain). Décor throughout is as you’d expect – puffer fish lanterns, palm-roofed longhouse dancefloor, Chinese bamboo bar, and the management are aiming to entice local celebs and Oxford Uni Speakers.
Club sounds: Depends on the night. Tuesday is student night Juice, with Dance and House. Thursdays are live bands and open mic.
