After a wave of sports personalities coming out recently, two international rugby players from the UK, Sam and Thomas Burgess, have stepped up in support of wiping out homophobia from sport.
Sam said: “I don’t see why there should be any discrimination about colour, sexuality, your heritage or where you’re from.
“Sport is a great thing, and it brings people from all different aspects of life together, so why should your sexuality be a problem? The only way we are going to understand the issue is if people get out there and tell their story so we can help fix it.”
Sam and Thomas play for an Australian team co-owned by Russell Crowe, and as if that isn’t delightful enough, they’re backing a new study that’s aiming to discover how prevalent homophobia is in sport and whether it puts people off playing.
Gareth Thomas, who came out in 2009, said: “Many athletes around the world fear they won’t be accepted by their teammates and others if they are honest about their sexuality.
“I was one of those athletes and I wish, at the time, I understood how many other people were experiencing the same thing. We need to change sporting culture so that sexuality is no longer an issue.”
The study hopes to show how England shapes up compared to the rest of the world, and you can take part in it here. And Sam and Thomas are really hot, too, right?
