Exclusive interview: Hollyoaks hunk Ayden Callaghan

We talk to the former GT cover star, who's up for sexiest male at the British Soap Awards...

It's one of the most important events on the calendar – well, for us anyway – the British Soap Awards. In just a few weeks time, we'll see the coronation of a new Sexiest Male for 2014. There are some big names in the running – like EastEnder's Danny Dyer and Corrie's Ryan Thomas. But for us, there can be only one winner, and that's the hunky and oh-so-charming Hollyoaks heartthrob Ayden Callaghan.

We caught up with Ayden for a quick chat about how he stays in such good shape, his love for his gay fans and the reaction he had from stripping off for one of our cover shoots earlier in the year. So have a read, fall in love with Ayden all over again and, while you're at it, make sure you vote for him for Sexiest Male by following the link below. Come on, it would be rude not to...

GT: Firstly, congratulations on your nomination. How does it feel being in the running for Sexiest Male?

Ayden Callaghan: Well, you know, when I was at drama school I dreamed of either Sexiest Male or the Olivier for Best Actor, so it’s nice to be nominated [laughs]. No, it’s great. It’s all a bit of fun isn’t it? I’m flattered.

What would it mean for you to win?

It would mean that my ancestors passed down some decent genes [laughs]. For me, it’ll be lovely to show that the family and the character has embedded into the show and that we’re popular and the fans like this. It’s nice to be in the running. There’s some very, very good looking guys in there as well.

Speaking of which, what about the competition?

The competition in this show alone is pretty fierce let alone taking into consideration all the other chaps in the other shows, so…

Who’s your money on?

Probably be last year’s winner, Danny [Mac]. He’s a very, very popular lad. He’s got a big following. My money would be on him. But as I said, it’s nice to be in the running and it’d be nice to make the shortlist now having been put up there. I’ll take that as a moral victory.

You were our cover star not too long back when you stripped naked to raise money for the National AIDS Trust… how was the reaction from that?

Reaction was really overwhelmingly positive. It was a lot bigger than I thought it would be and everybody’s just really positive. It was a lot of fun as well. I was dead chuffed to be on the cover, to be honest with you. I never expected that to be the case. The press office said “oh they’re doing this issue and they’ve got loads of great photos and they want to use you for the cover in January”. It was probably the most flattering thing that’s happened to me so far in life.

What’s the reaction from the fans been like? Particularly your gay ones? As you know, you certainly have our support…

It’s been good. It’s nice for the ego. I’ve got my feet on the ground, it was a bit of fun, but the reaction again has been really nice. People have really got behind me, and they’ve all been really really lovely – as have you guys! And a lot of your readers have been in touch and said they’re slinging a vote my way so that’s really appreciated.

Obviously you have a massive gay following on the soap… what do you think of that?

It’s really flattering, as I said in my interview for the naked issue, I didn’t expect it but it’s great to have the support of the GT readers. The show is colourful, vibrant, energetic and sexy and appeals to everyone, and hopefully that will show at these awards. There's a lot of love, and generosity and warmness that comes through from the gay following.

We’ve talked to you before about your routine and how you stay in shape… Got any tips for the GT readers?

My thing is I that I drink plenty of water through the day and that never changes. I eat very very clean, so I don’t have lots of sauces, sugars, and creams; all that kind of thing. I eat veg and salads and things. “Eat clean and train dirty” is the mantra, and that’s what I do. And then Sunday is my little cheat day where I get to eat like Henry VIII.

Anything in particular?

I love my salty and sweet. Like chocolate and peanut butter, or maple syrup and bacon. All that really really naughty stuff. I love it. And yeah, the rest of the time I train. I train hard. I mix my training up every ten weeks. I got from doing heavier based stuff to ten weeks of lighter based things, because you can’t build muscle and burn fat at the same time. Just the main thing is that I do it because I want to be fit and healthy.

We know you have a background in football as well…

Yeah, although I was the worst trainer in football. I would make any excuse to get out of it. I hated it! I was alright, but when my dad was the manager, it was much harder to get out of training.

Moving on to Hollyoaks… obviously you can’t give too much away, but what’s in store for Joe Roscoe? Obviously you’re involved in a pretty major storyline at the moment…

Major, major things are happening for Joe Roscoe. Joe’s decided that Fraser needs to be gone…

With the inconvenience of limousines….

Absolutely, yeah. Next week is going to be a big week for the show and for my character personally, and we’re going to see the demise of Fraser Black, which is going to be huge! Joe is definitely on the list of suspects.

First-round voting will close at midday on Tuesday, April 22. Second-round voting will then open at 10am on Monday, April 28 before closing on Friday, May 23 at 3pm.
