Virginia has anti-sodomy laws that criminalises oral or anal sex, between both heterosexual and homosexual adults including in the privacy of their homes. The penalty is 1 to 5 years. Direct criminal enforcement of these laws against private activity between consenting adults is rare. However, in Virginia these sodomy laws have provided a basis for denying child custody and visitation rights to lesbian mothers or gay fathers.

Generally speaking, Virginia enjoys pleasantly hot summers and relatively mild but crisp winters, with moderate rainfall throughout the year. Average coastal temperatures in July and August rarely exceed 32°c, while in winter there is often snow. The mountainous areas in the west of the region provide welcome respite from the higher temperatures of summer.
The best time to visit is during the summer months though come early or late if heat is a problem for you.
