Scene and Culture
Costa Rica is the most liberal country in Central America with progressive attitudes on homosexuality. This is reflected in the relatively large gay scene in San Jose where we you will find many western style bars, restaurants, clubs, saunas, hotels and guest houses. There is even a small scene in Manuel Antonio on the Pacific coast with gay hotels and a gay beach. Costa Rica is a beautiful country and a particularly good destination for the gay and lesbian traveller.
Gay Age of Consent
Lesbian Age of Consent
Straight Age of Consent
The Constitution of Costa Rica protects homosexuals as equal to any citizen of Costa Rica, however, the police have been known to occasionally harass gay men and transvestites. Closeted homosexuality is generally tolerated. In a recent gallup poll 70% of the people interviewed believed that homosexuals should have the same rights as heterosexuals. Homosexuality is not illegal at the age of 15 if "previous corruption" exist whatever that means. 15 is therefore the "effective age" of consent.
Costa Rican Colon
