Scene and Culture

Venezuela is a typical Latin American country as far as lesbian and gay rights are concerned. A macho culture prevails and whilst consensual lesbian and gay male sexual acts between adults are legal gays and lesbians still face discrimination and harassment. There is however a reasonable scene centred in Caracas where there are some 10 or so gay clubs and bars and several saunas.

Legal Notes

In 1999 during the preparation of a new consitution, a proposal was made to include a clause banning discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation. In 1998 gay men were formally banned from joining the military. Venezuela requires all 18 year-old men to join the military for a period of service, so by claiming to be gay you can avoid call up.
