Scene and Culture
Venezuela is a typical Latin American country as far as lesbian and gay rights are concerned. A macho culture prevails and whilst consensual lesbian and gay male sexual acts between adults are legal gays and lesbians still face discrimination and harassment.
There is however a reasonable scene centred in Caracas where there are some 10 or so gay clubs and bars and several saunas.
Gay Age of Consent
Lesbian Age of Consent
In 1999 during the preparation of a new consitution, a proposal was made to include a clause banning discrimination on the ground of sexual orientation. In 1998 gay men were formally banned from joining the military. Venezuela requires all 18 year-old men to join the military for a period of service, so by claiming to be gay you can avoid call up.
Venezuela has a tropical climate influenced by altitude. The best time to visit is during the drier months of December to April.
The country has four climatic zones. (1.) The Tierra Caliente comprising the coastal plains, valleys and central prairies with an elevation less than 800 metres and temperatures averaging 25c to 35c. (2.) The Tierra Templada which comprises the lower mountain slopes and plateaux between 800 metres and 2,000 metres with temperatures averaging 10c to 25c. (3.) The Tierra Fria a sub-alpine zone of the mountains from 2,000 to 3,000 metres with average temperatures below 24c (4.) The Paramos above the timberline which has an average temperature seldom above 15c.
The wet season is from May to November with an average annual precipitation varying from 1,400 mm in the Andes to 280 mm on the coast. Average temperature ranges in Caracas are from 24c to 27c all year.
